SHSAT Exam Information & Schedules

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is a high school entrance examination taken by eighth and ninth grade students.

This test is approximately 3 hours.
Students are evaluated based on their understanding in areas of verbal/reading comprehension and mathematics.

Over 30,000 students take the SHSAT exam every year.
Only about 5,000 of these students are accepted to a school of their choice.
The purpose of this exam is to gain acceptance to any one of the desired schools listed below:

Brooklyn Latin School
Brooklyn Technical High School
High School of American Studies at Lehman College
High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College
Queens High School for the Sciences at York College
Staten Island Technical High School
Stuyvesant High School

The SHSAT exam duration is 3 hours.​

Math Parts of the Exam:

The math section consists of 57 questions.​

Verbal Parts of the Exam:

The verbal section consists of 57 multiple choice questions.
  • ​20 Revising and Editing questions​​

  • 5-8 Standalone questions with 2 passages containing 6-8 questions each

  • 6 Reading passages with 5-7 questions each​

  • October 1, 2024 (Tuesday):  High School Application, LaGuardia Application & Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) Registration Opens 
  • October 18, 2024 (Friday): SHSAT Registration Closes 
  • October 30, 2024 (Wednesday): SHSAT School Day Testing 
  • November 16-17, 2024 (Saturday & Sunday): SHSAT Testing (8th grade students not participating in school day testing)
  • December 4, 2024 (Wednesday): High School Application and LaGuardia Application Closes 
  • December 7-8, 2024(Saturday & Sunday): SHSAT Testing (9th grade students)
  • March 6, 2025 (Thursday): High School Offer Release
